Florida Sun & Algae Defense

Your roof’s worst enemy doesn’t even need a name.

UV is just patient. Algae is just persistent. Florida gives them both more chances than any other state. We give your roof a way to fight back.

If you live in Florida and your roof is more than five years old, look at it from the curb. Notice the difference between the south-facing slope and the north-facing one? The south slope is faded and a little brittle-looking. The north slope has those telltale black streaks running from ridge to gutter. Welcome to your two main enemies — and they’re both fixable in one afternoon.

What UV does to your shingles

Asphalt shingles age the way skin ages — they dry out. Florida’s UV index is among the highest in the lower 48 (we hit “extreme” — UV index 11+ — for most of the summer). UV bombards the asphalt, drives off the oils that kept the shingle flexible, and leaves you with a roof that cracks instead of bends.

Once shingles get brittle, the granules they were holding onto come loose. You’ll see them in the gutter every storm. The granules were doing two jobs — protecting the asphalt from more UV, and helping channel water off the slope. Lose them, and aging accelerates from “patient” to “obvious” inside two seasons.

Signs your roof is losing the UV fight

  • Granules accumulating in your gutters or downspout splash zones
  • Bald patches on south- or southwest-facing slopes
  • Curling or cupping shingle corners
  • Visible color fading compared to the rest of the roof
  • Shingles that crack when stepped on

What algae does (and what those black streaks really are)

Those black streaks running down your shingles aren’t dirt and aren’t a roof failure. They’re Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacterium that loves warm, humid environments and feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Florida’s basically a year-round buffet for it.

Streaks tend to start on north-facing slopes (cooler, longer to dry after rain), under tree canopy, and on roofs that have lost some of their granule protection. They’re cosmetic at first — but the colony’s literal job is to eat your shingles, and over time it shortens roof life.

Why pressure-washing isn’t a fix

Soft-wash and chlorine treatments knock down the visible streaks for a season or two. Then the algae comes back, often worse, because pressure-washing strips granules and creates the perfect surface for re-colonization. We can clean a roof when needed, but cleaning without sealing is a short-term win that costs you long-term life.

How AcrySeal solves both problems at once

Against UV

  • UV-blocking topical layer reduces direct UV penetration of the asphalt below.
  • Penetrant chemistry restores oils to dried-out shingles, making them flexible again.
  • Granules get locked into the substrate, restoring the first line of UV defense.

Against algae

  • Microbicide additives in the AcrySeal formula resist re-colonization.
  • Sealed surface is hostile to the moisture-and-limestone environment algae needs.
  • If your roof is already streaked, we soft-wash before sealing — clean roof, then a sealed surface that doesn’t invite the streaks back.

The bonus: your roof looks new again

UV-faded shingles get their color back when the oils come back. Black-streaked shingles get cleaned and sealed. Most homeowners notice the difference from across the street the day after we finish. It’s the only home upgrade we know of that gives you both a curb-appeal jump and a documented maintenance record for your insurance carrier.

Frequently asked questions

Will the algae streaks come back after rejuvenation?

Not the way they were. The microbicide additives in AcrySeal resist re-colonization, and the sealed surface doesn’t give algae the moisture-plus-limestone access it needs. We see streak return on rejuvenated roofs to be slow and minimal — typically nothing visible for the warranty period.

What if my roof is already heavily streaked?

We soft-wash first, then rejuvenate. The combination is exactly what those streaks have been begging for — clean shingle, sealed surface, locked granules, and a hostile environment for the next round of algae.

Does sun damage void my shingle manufacturer warranty?

Most shingle warranties exclude UV-related fading after a certain number of years (usually 10). Manufacturers know it happens — they just don’t cover it. Rejuvenation is one of the few options for addressing UV damage without a tear-off.

Can rejuvenation help with heat reflection?

Mildly. AcrySeal isn’t a cool-roof coating, so we don’t claim cooling performance. The flexibility and granule retention are the main wins. If energy efficiency is your primary goal, talk to us about cool-roof options for next time you replace.

Should I worry about algae on a brand-new roof?

Not for the first 5–7 years usually. Newer shingles often have algae-resistant additives baked in for the first decade. Once that protection wears off, that’s when we recommend rejuvenation to extend the algae-resistant life of the roof.
